People
Aaron- Former roommate at the SHOE, now lives in Queens, New York, after a few years living in Brooklyn.
Dylan- Rommate from August 2000 to present. Fairly hateful individual with a penchant for starting arguments. But also a funny and decent fellow.
Jen K- Friend met while on the job for the NYC Parks Department. Amusing. Also has the distinction of currently being the youngest friend, and the only one born in the 80's.
Jenny G- Jen from DC. An online friend who shows up occassionally who will no longer let me link her page for fear of discovery.
Josh- Roomate from August 2000 to present. Roommate of Geoff in college.
Katey- Former PFC, now living in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Likes indie rock, cute boys, copping an attitude. Dislikes most things status quo, perceived injustices, and probably things like corporate interests.
Kathy- Former PFC, former ex-girlfriend of Jed, former resident of Park Slope. Currently lives in San Francisco, where she is getting yet another master's degree, this one in art education. A real sweetheart.
Marc- College friend, moreso of Aaron and Jed. Currently in NYU film school.
Nate- Friend of Caryn, through his roommate, who was in one of our classes at NYU. Works for the Parks Department.
Phoebe- Waifish co-worker and friend of Caryn. Friendly and outgoing, enjoys music, drinking, assorted feminism stuff. Ain't gals just the craziest things ever?
Susannah- College friend, moreso of Aaron's girlfriend Hilary. Jed and I had an acting class with her. She was much better than either of us. Currently lives in Park Slope, which is how we ended up hanging out with her, since we never really did so in college.
Places
7B- A loud and often crowded rock and roll bar in the East Village. Frequented due to its location, decent music selection, and cheap pitchers of beer.
Bar Ries- Quiet little bar on 5th Ave. and 6th St. The inside is too small to fit more than a few people, but the outdoor area is the best place to drink in the summer.
Cafe Pick Me Up - Coffee shop on 9th st. and Ave A. in Manhattan's East Village. An often crowded little spot, across the street from Tompkins Square Park. Good coffee, nice food, mostly friendly people. And some amusingly pretentious fucks. My most frequented coffee shop in the City.
Great
Lakes - The dark and charismatic bar situated on
the corner of 5th Avenue and 1st Street in Brooklyn. The bar features a
wonderful jukebox full of mostly indie rock, relatively cheap drinks, and
nice bartenders who offer up free drinks with some regularity. Again, also
some amusingly pretentious fucks, like this guy who likes to wear safety
goggles for some reason.
The "home" bar, where as
much time is spent as all other bars combined.
Holiday Cocktail Lounge- A dank little bar on St. Marks Place in the East Village. The bar is a few feet below street level, features but one door and very low ceilings, and is therefore one of the smokiest bars in town. Also, an old and perhaps crazy Romanian bartender named Stefan will sing, yell, dance, and do just about everything besides get you a drink in a timely fashion. Only three beers served. However, all drinks are three dollars.
Long Tan- A new-age thai restaurant and bar on 5th ave and Union st. in Park Slope. Hip and loungy, the drinks are overpriced but the setting is ok. Not a final destination bar, but good for a drink or two.
The Sidewalk - A bar
and restuarant on Ave. A and 6th Street in Manhattan's East Village. Offers
2-for-1 drinks until 8, and live music in the back. The sight of many pleasant
and not-so-pleasant conversations and gatherings.
Miscellany
The F- The primary subway from Park Slope into Manhattan and Queens. In Manhattan it's the 6th Ave. local train. Popular destinations on the F include Greenwich Village, the Lower East Side, and Carol Gardens.
Home- My primary residence. Currently, it is an apartment in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, just a block from spacious Prospect Park.
Park Slope- The area of Brooklyn bordered by Flatbush Ave, and Prospect Ave. on the north and south, and 4th Ave and Prospect Park on the west and east. Divided into three areas- North Slope from Flatbush to about 1st st., Center Slope from 1st to 9th, and South Slope from 9th to Prospect Ave. Often described as the "yuppie" section of Brooklyn. More accurately, seems to the family section, as many small children and dogs abound. Not as hip as Williamsburg or as trendy as Carol Gardens. Which is a good thing.
Prospect Park- The
Brooklyn park designed by Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux , who
also designed Central Park. Used mainly by us for bike riding and frisbee
throwing, the park also features an ice skating rink, a zoo, and a 60-acre
pond, which is part of an intricate network of wetlands, made through both
park design and glacial terrain.
