April 9, 1999. Thursday
I'm here at Washington
and Lee's Leyburn Library. As usual, logging on using my old
school account has proven maddening. Just checking my email took forever,
largely due to the very slow computers in the Reference Circle, but also
because the program thought I had 1244 unread messages. Anyway, now I'm
down on lower level 1, in the computer lab. Much quicker computers, but
still pretty. To my immediate left is one Maciej Golubiewski, or
something like that. An admitted Pole and slav. I've known him for
a few years. I actually ran into him while going to lunch at work one day.
That was a shock. Anyway, I'm basically sitting around waiting for
Rodzilla to finish her finals. I arrived
here pretty early last night, but couldn't find anyone. I figured
Jed was screening his calls, so i went over to his place out in the woods.
Of course, he was there, screening his calls. Actually, he was down at
the neighbors when he heard me bounding down the steps. I often bound.
We hung out for a little while and watched The Three Amigos on Comedy
Central, then I went and got some eats with Rodzilla.
It was about ten by now, and all that was open was Taco Bell, which is
always fine by me.
I met Jed
this morning around 6am at the local truck stop for breakfast. Of course,
i was supposed to meet him around 5:40, but who's counting? Anyway,
we played some video games and had some breakfast and chatted. He
still has two finals to take. One's a theatre final and the other
is Macroeconomic Theory. You know, I used to be an econ major, but
i dropped it halfway through my senior year. There's not one day
that passes that I don't thank god that i did that. thankfully, Macro
Theory was one class i never had to take. It really woulda killed
me. Sure, i only had two classes left to finish out the major, but those
last two classes would've taken years off my life. Besides, what good is
an Econ degree gonna do you if you have a C average? Anyway, I'm
a little worried about old Jed. I hope he just pulls through and finishes.
Once he gets over this hump, things'll be a lot better, I reckon. Plus,
with him and Rodzilla having an awful time finishing their work, I have
to play the stable guy. i hate it when things are going so bad for other
people that I can't complain about anything.
I went back to Rodzilla,
drove her to campus, and slept for a few hours
During my sleep, I had a really weird dream.
Jed and I were driving around, in separate cars, and all these horrible
accidents were happening. There was one guy in this little hatchback
that kepy trying to squeeze in between cars on the highway. Finally, he
tried to squeeze in a little too close, and started to get smooshed between
a car and a truck. In the back seat was a baby in a baby seat being thrashed
back and forth. And all around us all these other cars were wrecking
all over the place.
Jed and I arrived at
some sort of mall or bookstore, where a pale, topless woman appeared. She
looked like some sort of heroin chic model. She said, "excuse me" and pulled
her bikini top back down and walked by. Then I noticed that her bikini
bottom was made of whipped cream or something. Anyway, we ordered
some coffee, and exited the dream.
Somehow, my dream managed
to segue into a scene with James Coburn and some generic Russian guy who
i guess was a hitman or something. James Coburn played a comic book artist
i think, and he and the russian hitman were planning some sort of scheme.
To make a long story short, there ended up being a lot of shooting
and killing, but all done in a fashionable, almost humourous, Hollywood
way. It was weird though, because it wasn't until after I woke up
that I realized some key details in the dream. that hardly ever happens.
It sucked that I woke up though, because normally after I realize something
is a dream, i can manipulate my dreamworld. I don't have lucid dreams very
often, and i was curious about the girl with the whipped-cream pants.
So it looks like I won't get to stop through Charlottesville after all. Rodzilla's not gonna finish until about 5, and I gaurantee you we won't be outta here until 7. So if i wanna make it back to DC at a reasonable hour, my Big Fun sightseeing tour will have to wait until another day. Which is ok. The weather is kinda shitty today. It's warm, but muggy. But tomorrow is supposed to be grand. So we'll see how things go. In the meantime, I have absolutely nothing to do for the next 6 hours. Maybe I'll go shopping for groceries or something. Or go get a haircut. It sucks that the only two people that I wanna see around here are busy until 5. I guess I'll walk around campus for a little while. But I do feel a little funny being here. But then, who cares?
Anyway, my left hand hurts again, almost
constantly these days, and i think all this constant computer stuff is
making my eyes go bad.
