After hearing about George Bush's plan for a Constitutional Amendment defining marriage as a union between a man in a woman, I finally thought that was the last straw. Previously I thought, despite all logical reasons not to vote for him, that I might actually vote for the man in November. After hearing this Amendment ridiculousness, however, I thought, he just lost my vote. I was outraged. With everything else going on, he's going to try to do this? It's not even his beliefs that get my panties in a bunch. It's the fact that he actually wants to amend the Constitution for it. The most absurd thing I've heard him say yet. I'll support him through the war, through the trickle-down economics, through the man to the moon initiative. Fine. But this? It's all a little much.
That was a week ago. And the more I think about it, or the more I read, the more I realize that this might possibly have to be just another dollop of shit I'm going to have to swallow, because as much as I loathe most aspects of Bush as a person, I can't see myself supporting anyone who might really oppose him. If Clark gets the nomination, I'll think about it. There's something appealing about a career military man who doesn't seem to have made many friends in the military. It's funny, though, reading a lot of what people are writing. The writing I find my convincing is from liberals and life-long Democrats who are now supporting Bush. This is, it seems, mostly due to the fact that he actually has a plan. And I share a lot of their opinions, especially their sense of disbelief at the short memories the Democrats seem to have of world history. Even their own party's history. It's funny, I took this Presidential Match test, and Bush ranked the lowest out of all the candidates. Even below Sharpton. I think it's bullshit though, because reading their descriptions of the candidates I matched up with, it doesn't really fit. I wonder if some of the candidates actually sponsored this. Wouldn't surprise me. My main problems with many opponents of Bush is that that is their whole identity. They don't care what he does, they've decided they hate him no matter what. He could achieve world peace tomorrow, and people would gripe about how he did it. It's sick how some people get a sense of satisfaction over how poorly the war is going, just because it makes Bush look bad.
Thirty-three percent of those who voted for Kerry in NH said they voted for him solely based on his "electability." They said this was more important to them than his stand on any particular issue. This reflects poorly on Bush, yes, if people would take anything over him, but it makes these voters look worse. Like blind sheep. And it's seems that they cannot possibly see past their hate. Their entire political identity is the opposition of one man. A man they dare call a fascist. That's another thing that really makes me want to strangle someone. How lightly people will throw around the term "fascist." Hussein was a fascist. Bush is a morally repugnant individual who may have shady dealings with large, war-profiteering corporations. But he is not. a. fascist. And I've said it before, but it's terribly disrespectful to anyone who's lived under fascism to say that, especially from your cozy home, on your high-speed internet connection. Where you can look at anything you want and say anything you want. Assholes.
Any about this whole going-to-war-under-false-pretenses thing, I can even forgive that. People say, "Oh, Clinton was impeached, and all he did was have an affair. Bush lied about stuff, and we went to war." Or, as the popular sticker goes "Bush Lies. Who Dies." Another punch in the face coming! People seem to forget, that when Clinton lied, he actually committed a crime. He was under oath. Personally, I was against the impeachment, and still think it shouldn't have happened. But it was legal, and it did. And, for chrissakes, Clinton lied to the one person, his wife, that he's supposed to be truthful to. You think he's going to be truthful to 250 million faceless strangers? Do people really think Bush is the biggest liar of themall? So there were no WMD. Someone would be hard pressed to convince me that the ends here do not justify the means. My parents made me do stuff all the time. Think I wanted to take swimming lessons? They fed me medicine that tasted like shit. I think some of it actually was. And it was awful. But it sure helped. I have no problem with a pre-emptive strike. The execution was botched, but in principle I have no problem with it.
And about turning Iraq over to the Iraqis? Or how there's no Iraqi government? How quickly do people expect these things to happen? Punch to the face! Just packing up and leaving would absolutely be the least responsible thing possible now.
So yeah, as of now, Bush, that smug fucker. He may still get my vote. And even if he doesn't, I probably just won't vote.
