Whether you or for this Iraq war or against it, I think one thing we can all agree on is that the absolute coolest thing to come out of it is this (from the NY Times):And of course, there are the mine-hunting dolphins -- a total of nine in the region -- specially trained to use their natural sonar to root out the deadly underwater bombs.
So far, the dolphins are getting rave reviews.
"The lord God decided to give them the best sonar ever devised,'' Mair said. "We can only aspire to their ability."
Fucking dolphins helping the U.S. military search for mines. It's like a cartoon. I really want to see Aquaman get involved somehow. Maybe command a giant squid or sperm whale to take out all the Iraqi sea defenses. Next they'll be using carrier pigeons to relay messages and St. Bernards to bring relief supplies to their troops. Can we get a squad of suicide monkeys?
And just after writing that, I saw this.Anyway, that unwanted guest Winter has returned again for a short stay. We were lulled into a false sense of security after a week of moderate temperatures. Now it's in the goddam 30's again. It seems the only way to beat this weather is to get out of town. Luckily, that's exactly what I'm doing. Going to 'Carolina in my mind. And physically as well. Old SHOE roommate Aaron is getting hitched this weekend, and tomorrow Jed and I are driving down to the Southland. Well stop off in Lexington, VA, our old college town, for the night and visit with my ex-girlfriend Liz. Haven't seen her in about three and a half years. Last time was probably back in October and/or December of 1999 when she came to visit me in D.C. Nice girl, that one. Anyway, then it's off to South Carolina. I'm still not allowed by law to drive in North Carolina, so I'll get to soak in the atmosphere while Jed takes the wheel.
I'm looking forward to the drive, but I do loathe weddings. An otherwise fun trip ruined by endless formalities and events and smiling and hugging. though the drinking, revelry, and low-levels of debauchery can be wildly entertaining. And I did have a pretty good time out in San Francisco for SHOE roommate Dan's wedding. Though most of it was in Vegas or the drive to SF, and I did actually have a pretty severe nervous breakdown my last night in SF. But we're better now.
Also weighing on my mind is my birthday in 9 days. I'll be 27. Though, as usual, I've felt 27 for a while now, just as I felt 26 for months before actually turning 26. But this is, i think, the last one where I can just sit back and enjoy being in my 20's, without having to pay attention to the spectre of 30 hanging out there somewhere in the near future. Going back to the college town will certainly not make me feel any younger.
