October 8th, 2002. Tuesday
I've been throwing money around too much lately. In a way where I don't want to check my bank account to see what's really going on. I'd rather wait until the blow is softened by my next paycheck. It all began last week...
Caught the movie "Secretary" last week. Very enjoyable. Lots of laughs, weirdness, and spanking. Highly recommend it.
Went out with my former neighbor Rachel last Thursday. I think this was the first time we actually hung out by plan. Almost all our previous interactions had been conversations in the stairs between our apartments or at parties or on the subway or something. So it was a little weird, after a knowing her for a year, to actually sit down someplace. So we went to this noodle place on 6th ave. I didn't want to spend much money, and ordered something light. Still spent over ten bucks though. Then walked over to this other place on Bleeker for coffee and pie. Or cake. All in all, a good night. I enjoy talking with Rachel, and we see eye to eye on just about everything. Except politics. Though I don't really know what I believe in lately. Anyway very interesting girl. And she can write a pretty catchy song.Friday, I watched Fight Club with former upstairs-and current neighbor Miss Charming Melodee, who had never seen it. I hadn't seen it in its entirety since i saw it in the theatre. There were a lot of little ticks in the film that I didn't remember from the theatre version, and I wondered if they were DVD extras. Anyway, every time I see the movie, it makes more and more sense to me. The only problem I have with the film is the contradiction in Brad Pitt's character. He spends the movie saying things like "you're not your fucking khakis," but is the most stylish guy in this particular world. Anyway, it was also the first time I'd seen the movie in it's entirety since reading this fascination theory written by my brother Galvin, the so-called "Calvin and Hobbes" theory of Fight Club. Quite compelling, I must say. It's even linked to on the Chuck Palahniuk's website.
Lot of trekking around on Saturday. Had lunch at the "Cozzy Corner," a few blocks from my home. Yes, it's spelled "Cozzy." It's on "Franklyn" street. Crazy kids. Then off into the city. Picked up some expensive curtains at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Miss Charming Melodee picked up an egg-shaped cheese grater. It was part of an entire line of household items shaped like eggs. They had the grater, a garlic press, a can opener, among other items. I thought the grater would be difficult to use, but thought it looked cool, so i wholeheartedly encouraged the purchase. Later I found out that you don't run the cheese over the grater, as is standard in the grater world, but just the opposite. You slide the grater over the cheese, and the cheese finds its way up inside the egg. Then you pop open the egg and collect your cheese. So it looks cool, and is even more usefull than a conventional grater. Huzzah.
After BBB, we wandered around for a while, eventually sitting in Union Square for some time, right by the dog run. Lots of people in a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Including one repulsive woman wearing what appeared to be small bathing suit bottoms, with her diseased, cottage-cheese legs churning back and forth. Anyway, besides the involuntary retching, a nice pleasant afternoon was had. Went home, put up my curtains, and cooked a modest but tasty meal.
Went out Saturday night to a party with my friend Michelle, who has recently re-entered my life after a long absence. Dragged Jed along, and we met her at her friend's house on 30th st. and 8th ave. Mostly banker types and whatnot. I felt underdressed. They were all going out to Spa or somewhere afterwards, so Jed and I opted out and headed downtown to look for Jed's roommates. Didn't find them, but I managed to get pretty drunk in the two bars we looked in. Took a cab back to Brooklyn. Drunk and tired, went over to Miss Charming Melodee's. Should've just gone home. I fell asleep very quickly, woke up feeling like crap, and spent all day Sunday eating and sleeping. Lunch arond noon, nap till 4:30, left the house only to get donuts. Made some soup. Made dinner. Watched football, baseball, assorted movies: watched "L.A. Confidential" one and a half times; "She's the One," parts of "The Natural," most of "True Lies," which for some reason I couldn't stop flipping back to.Yesterday after work, I was waiting for the Braves-Giants game, and had to endure most of the President's speech. I would have voted for the guy two years ago, but man, he really makes it tough. If I could go back in time, I'd probably still vote for him, but I wouldn't vote for him in the next election. I don't kow how smart or dumb he is, but he sure doesn't know the meaning of "eloquence." Just because someone's a poor public speaker doesn't make them dumb. But I can't think of anyone who makes me ready to cringe more than this guy. For most of his speech, I flipped between that and "Joe Versus the Volcano." Quite an underrated movie. I think it's a gas. More interesting than all this war talk anyway. Not that I oppose war. But not that I support it. I believe in a kind of reverse laissez-faire. I won't interfere in the affairs of the government. I'm very status-quo. I rarely rock the boat. Though I suppose that could change at any moment, should the fancy strike me.
