Lately, nothing makes me want to sing out loud more than Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. It has a few moments that make me very, very sleepy, but I think it's more because I'm so tired than the music being boring or quiet. A wonderful, wonderful album. The song "Holland 1945" has been playing constantly, and I've yet to get even a little tired of it. It so energetic. It makes me want to scream like a banshee.
I've been listening to a lot of music I downloaded also. I burned Ryan Adams' "Gold" a few weeks ago. I didn't like it very much at first, but now it's really starting to grow on me. I downloaded his first album yesterday, and its sounds like I'll like that one better. More twangy and countrified than rock and roll.
And now I am home. My first real leisure time of the day. And just before one in the morning. Right after work, I dashed over to Thompson street. I started guitar lessons today. I've been playing for like eight years, and I'm pretty lousy. I really don't know what's going on with the guitar. It's the only instrument I play that I've never had a lesson. So i figured it's about time I try to play for real. So I called this guy who has fliers all over the Village. He teaches jazz guitar, and that seemed pretty good to me. I don't listen to jazz at all though. But I can appreciate it. The guy is a bit of a loon, but in a good way. Mostly. He's really into playing and teaching, and his main goal is to get his students playing as soon as possible. I was there for about an hour and a half, and it was a blast. I didn't know what the hell he was talking about half the time, but it was really cool to listen to him play and try to understand what was going on. He kept calling me "a rock guy going jazz." I told him I didn't know much or listen to jazz, but I think he took that for meaning that I've lived my life in a cave. He was like "Have you heard of Miles Davis? Thelonious Monk? Coltrane? Bird?" And I'm like, uh, yeah. But it was cool. I had a lot of fun. It's really nice to be learning something that I'm really interested in.
Then i rushed from there to the night job. Watched three hours of tv. Then took my good old time getting home. I was pretty tired of rushing around all day, but I really couldn't wait to get home. And now i'm sitting around in my underpants. Back when I lived in DC, the best part of my day was getting home from work and taking my pants off the minute I got home. Oh, it was so great. So liberating. It was like the little ceremony that meant I was on my time now. And sitting around in underpants is really comfortable.
