Daily Aggravations and Regrets
and various random thoughts

October 15th, 2001.  Monday

There hasn't been all that much going on, though I seem to be pretty busy.  I went home on Saturday for my dad's 60th birthday.  I spent most of the day running around town buying things to bring back to New York.  Mostly space organizing items, like a shelf and a cd rack and stuff like that.  And a level.  I've always wanted to own my own level.  And I bought some clothes at Target.  they got nice stuff for less than 10 bucks.  And it's always nice to be home, even if it's for less than 24 hours.  Garrick made it home Sunday morning, which was a surprise, so it was nice to see him.  He had a new printer for me, so that made it even better.  My brother Galvin has apparently been putting in some major time at the gym, because he's a little ball of muscle.  It's scary.  Anyway, it was a very pleasant weekend on the whole. My parents seemed in better spirits than I'd seen them in a while. I think my getting a job was a big relief, especially for my mom.  I start at James' company next monday, where i worked last summer. I'm not excited.  But it'll be good in several ways, the biggest being the money.  Which isn't a lot.  But financial independence can do a lot for you psychologically, so that'll be nice.  And healthcare is going to be a good thing too.  I had to go to the most ghetto eye doctor the other day, because the crappy insurance I have right now isn't accepted by any reputable place.  It was a total nightmare.  The guy spilled a container of rubbing alcohol, and basically had his had in my mouth as he was checking my eyes.  The office was a little gray room, with an eye chart hastily stuck on the wall, just for show.  I really got the feeling like he didn't know what the hell he was doing.  Things had to be unplugged through so other instruments could be plugged in. I've never experienced that before, a doctor's office where electrical outlets are at a premium.  And they wouldn't give me a copy of my prescription, which is the only reason I went in, so I could buy contacts. They kept trying to shake me down to buy frames and glass and contact there.  I told the woman I didn't need glasses, and she said "Your prescription is so high.  You need glasses.  You're just doing damage to your eyes.  You need something."  I think she thought I didn't have glass or contacts at all, like I've been walking throughout life with terrible eyesight for 20 years, and only when she said something did I realize that there was indeed something I could do to fix this perplexing vision problem.  Anyway, the whole thing was terribly traumatic.  You shouldn't go budget with things like your eyes or teeth.

Speaking of budget, the rental car I got for the weekend was a beat up wreck.  Well, it wasn't really a wreck, but it was all beat up, and the company hadn't even bother to clean it up.  There were cigarette butts and coffee cream containers on the floor, and other people's printed emails lying around.  I hope I'm not charged for the scratches and innumerous dents.
So I've spent the day fixing up the aparment.  I've installed all the things in my room that needed installing.  The bitch of the day was drilling wholes in the wall and shelf that I bought.  I'm always afraid that I'm going to drill through some wiring or something.  And I'm very nervous that the shelf is going to fall down.  each of the three braces is held in place by a single screw.  I used drywall anchors, but I'm still afraid the whole thing is going to come crashing down and crush my computer.  But the place looks nice.  Jed and Dylan and I finished painting the living room, after only a week.  Then we all rearranged the living room into a more liveable and comfortable arrangement.  It's a nice yellow color now, which gives the room a nice warm glow.  Then we sat around throwing out ideas of how to further improve the room, most of which were absurd suggestion done just for laughs.
Anyway, I'm just trying to make the most of my last week before starting a regular work life.  Now that it's actually going to happen, it's really undesirable.

Oh yeah- something I found particularly hiliarious:  We were hanging out with Matt on Friday night, and we were looking through a pile of pictures he had.  One of them showed him dancing on a stage.  We were like "What's this?"  And he said "That's the night I got high on absinthe and went to a gay club in London."  Part of me couldn't believe I'd actually heard him say that, and part of me couldn't believe I'd never heard him say that before friday.  It was funnier if you were there.  Trust me. No, really. it was hilarious.  Shut up.
