2001. Sunday
So far, Nora's visit has been remarkably pleasant. Not that I was expecting any unpleasantness, but there's been no real problem at all so far. Except for the fact that she hates air conditioning. This fact alone would probably prevent me from marrying someone. I need my climate control. Anyway, how bout that weekend? Lots to do. Well, not really. Just seemed like a lot going on since Nora's here. Friday, Matt, Jed, Nora and I went to Tonic to show Nora the place, had a few beers, and then I got real tired. And cranky. So I bought some chicken wings from McDonalds. They have chicken wings now. Not bad. Pepped me up just enough to last until we took a cab home.Saturday, I was awoken by rain and thunder. It was very nice to sleep in, especially since I'd been so tired all week. Though i didn't get to sleep in much, since I had a picnic to go to. On Tuesday, my former Parks boss/friend Kate called to invited me to her little bbq on saturday. We hadn't spoken in many months, and didn't part under the best terms. I was fairly sure she hated me, and that I'd never hear from her again. So it was sort of a pleasant surprise to hear from her. Anyway, Nora, Jed and I headed up during a break in the rain, but by the time we got all the way to her place way the fuck up on 217th st, it was raining again. I was expecting a lot of people, like her last party over Christmas, so I was pleasantly surprised when it was just a few people from Parks and their friends. It was mostly just hanging out on her back porch, eating picnic-y food, drinking beer and other alcoholic drinks, and telling stories. A pleasant time had by all. It was nice to see Kate again too.
We ended up getting a ride home from this girl Amanda, who was a friend of this girl Christiana, who I kind of knew from Parks. Coincidentally, she's going to NYU's journalism MA program in the fall, the same one I was in. Poor girl. Anyway, they told us they went to highschool together in Ft. Lauderdale, so of course Jed had to play the "Do you know..." game, where he names the two people he knows from Ft. Lauderdale. Nora and I exchanged "Oh God..." glances. But then when he asked, the two girls shot around and said "No way!" They actually did know him. So that was pretty amazing. And it was extra satisfying because it seems Jed plays this game quite a bit. They didn't have the best things to say about the guy we knew though.
Tired from walking and drinking, we spent the rest of the night in, after a quick meal at the Purity Diner on 7th ave. We watched Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon on DVD, which was convenient, because Nora was doing her nails and couldn't bother to read the subtitles. So we just switched it to English dubbing until she finished her nails, then back to Chinese with subtitltes after she'd finished. I really hate dubbing, and it was sort of distracting because the dubbing didn't match the subtitles. Still, one of the most amazing movies I've ever seen. It's got everything. We know this. We love it. And watching it made me even angrier that Gladiator won Best Picture this year.
And today is my brother Geoff's birthday. So happy birthday to him. He's 23 today.Went over to Rodzilla's place for dinner this evening as well. She was making dinner for her roommate katey, whose birthday is later in the week, or next week. Can't remember. She made her chicken scampy. It's good. Good and buttery. Her apartment is also hot as all getout, mainly because they had the ceiling fans blowing down intead of up. But a good time. A good amount of wine, lotsa cheese, and a buttery, buttery meal. Have I mentioned how much butter is in this chicken and its sauce? Like two whole sticks. For six people. That's a third of a stick for each person. I'm not saying it's not tasty, because it is. I'm just always amazed with how much of it I eat knowing what I know.
Anyway, i'm a buttery mess.
How many times do i say that?
