Mail to G-Rock
Sitting here at work, taking a little break from checking all this tax code. Today's sections include Section 83, "Property transferred in connection with performace of services." Anyhow, there was a free breakfast upstairs today, which i wasn't aware of till James told me. I'd already bought some coffee and saw the food, but I wasn't sure if it was for everybody or what. Being new here, I didn't want to seem presumptuous. Anyhow, a little lox and cream cheese makes it all a little more bearable. Of course, it's not really that bad at all. Much better than my previous jobs. No real dress code, and I can sit here and listen to my cd player. The cd this morning is Superchunk's "Foolish." but i digress.Anywho, last night, in celebration of Independence, Jed and I went down to 6th st. where Aaron of SHOE fame was having a little barbecue. It was sort of ghetto, but fun. They just moved a couch and some chairs onto the sidewalk, and just started a grill out there. I'm pretty sure it was techinically illegal. And drinking beers outdoors as well. But I figure the cops or fireman or whoever had better things to do yesterday than bust a little neighboorhood cook-out. I'm not sure how long we were there, but I did notice at one point that I had been sitting there for quite a while without saying a word. I think. Lately I just sit in my own little world and occassionally snap back into reality. Anyhow, I spent much of the evening sitting there wondering "How long have i been sitting here like this?"
So anyway, it's now after lunch. Only 2 more hours till I can go home. I'm looking forward to leaving work, but I'm wondering what I'll do when I get there. I can only imagine sitting in my room, slightly dazed, thinking about checking my email, playing Snood, or playing Nintendo. Maybe make some phone calls. What a life.
Before I went to bed last night, I was flipping through the channels and came across Jerry Falwell or somebody, whoever does the 700 Club, and he was talking to this guy who was dressed up as George Washington, in celebrationg of Independence Day. This dude was saying how the USA's greated gift to the world was their Constitution, because it was a Christian Document. He grounded this mostly on the fact that they date is prefaced with "... in the year of our Lord." Of course, he's right. The Constitution being a great gift to the world is something I've heard countless times before. but being a great gift because it's a Christian document struck me a bit peculiar. Of course, Christmas and Easter and the like are national holidays. So I guess he's right. But not about the gift part. If anything, that's the biggest flaw, if you ask me. Anyway, I don't want to rant and rave about this. I just wanted to mention that Falwell or whoever was asking this guy how he started impersonating George Washington, which he said "you do so very well!" Here's this guy's impersonation in a nutshell: A blue, somewhat historically questionable jacket, a dishelved looking grey wig, and saying "I" instead of "he" when referring to Washington. When he was talking outside of his Washington "impersonation," the only discernible difference was the change of pronouns. He didn't even bother altering his high-pitched nasally voice, or even sit up straight. It was a real joke. It was really kind of absurd. It looked like they pulled some bible beater off the street, threw a half-assed costume on him, and just let him do some freestyle George Washington. Clearly, this guy was nuts.
The fireworks display in NY wasn't too bad. Jed and I climbed up to our roof to view the festivities. The climb was treacherous, as it was pitch black. Compounding matters was the dangerous tendendcy of the steps on the fire-escape to just break off. We should probably write our landlord a letter about that. Anyway, what was cool about the fireworks was that there were about 5 separate displays, which were all visible from a vantage point accross the river in Brooklyn. We were right in front of the Downtown display, but the Uptown and Statue of Liberty fireworks were also pretty clear, as was the Staten Island one. It lit up the cityscape pretty impressively. But I'd say DC's is still probably more impressive. Of course, it's been a good 13 years since I saw it last.
i had a lot of trouble sleeping last night. I'd only been awake for about 12 hours when I tried to go to sleep. So I tossed and turned for many hours. Then when I woke up, it felt like I'd only slept for about 20 minutes. And what's worse, I have this horrible habit of waking up about 17 minutes before the alarm goes off. Very annoying. And since I couldn't sleep, I had my normal insomnia-induced anxiety attacks. The usual career/job stuff. Something that I was thinking about also was the fact that I have a girlfriend. Right now, that fact seems really, really weird to me. How in the world did that happen? When i think about Me, out in the world, and my normal mentality, attitude, and behavior, it seems weird that there would be someone in my life in that capacity. I'm not trying to make any remark on me or Rodzilla or me and Rodzilla. It just seemed a really weird status for me to have. Maybe because I've spent a lot of time alone lately, talking to myself, staring at a blank spot on the wall. Hmmmm. Oh well. What do you think, Greg?
