Daily Aggravations and Regrets
February 6, 2000. Sunday

In deference once again to Jed, I will not go into any detail about how much work I have to do, or the 2 inch thick pile of photocopied reading I have to finish.  Needless to say, if I'm writing this, I'm not getting any of said reading done.
I'm sitting here, watchin 120 Minutes on MTV.  I haven't really watched this in about 2 years at least, and it brings back memories of when I used to watch it all the time.  I don't think it was really on for the past year or so, and I think they just relaunched it recently.  There's an old PJ Harvey song on right now, "C'mon Billy."  I think that was popular back when I was watching the show a lot, so that's also giving me a feel of nostalgia, although I pretty much detest PJ Harvey.  But that's what made me want to write right now.  It's funny what random things make me want to write in my journal.  Tonight, it's 120 minutes.  I don't recall the last band that I really started to like after seeing them on 120 minutes.  I think maybe it was Radiohead.  I didn't really like them when "creep" came out, but I think after seeing the video for "Fake Plastic Trees," I thought they were great.  I recall that james was also quite taken by the song.  And this was when we weren't really friends.  And now they're one of my favorite bands.  Anyway, that was almost 5 years ago.
Speaking of nostalgia, the new Smashing Pumpkins video is on.  They used to be my favorite band.  I guess I've since grown out of that, but I still have a nostalgic sense of loyalty.  I kind of like the new song.  It's sort of sinister, in a rockin kind of way.  Anyhow, they're one of those bands that, even if you no longer like them, you'll probably buy every cd they ever put out, for some rationalized reason or another, just because they used to mean something.  Other bands in this category, for me, include Pavement, Luna, and the Silver Jews.  I still love these bands, but maybe one day I won't, but I'll probably still buy anything they put out.
And on a final musical note, Chris Cornell is on right now, the former leader of Soundgarden.  He's singing a soulful, earnest, sappy tune, and he looks ridiculous doing it.
So anyhow, today I went with my brother Geoff to retrieve his towed car.  Talk about a fucking ordeal.  They charged him 150 bucks for the towing fee, but on top of that they gave him 2 tickets too.  So he has to pay 3 times for the same violation.  fuckers.  I can maybe understand the first ticket, but why the second ticket if they were towing it at the same time?  Anyway, the towing place was at the Brooklyn Navy yard, not a very pleasant area.  The local residents didn't seem too friendly, and I was glad the sun was still up when we were walking around like idiots looking for the Navy Yard.  Of course, at least one of the women at the towing joint had to cop an attitude, and i responded by insulting her in my head with thoughts like "Oh yeah?  I'll never have to come back here (hopefully), but you have to come back here, to this depressing impound lot every day, you humorless wench."  Yeah, I'm real cool.
Anyhow, 120 minutes is proving more distracting than I thought.  It's actually been better than I thought it'd be.  the Foo Fighters were just on, and while I've never bought any of their cds, i really like them.  I think I've written about this before.  Speaking of things that've been used before, the Simpsons tonite was particularly weird.  They got a horse, and the comic book guy was quick to point out that the Simpsons had already had a horse, and it forced Homer to get a job at the quicky mart, which lead to all sorts of hilarious hijinks.  later Lisa said Marge might have a gambling problem, which they also had an episode about, and the comic book gut showed up wearing a shirt that said "Worst episode ever," and said "i'm watching you." i thought it was funny. But the rest of the episode was weird, and the evil trolls posing as horse jockeys kind of gave me the creeps.  Now it's late, and dark, and I'm scared.
